Well tested, but try before you buy! Note: The screenshot below was with a 13" notebook laptop screen. on a 22 inch widescreen, you can see all alerts, issues, etc... in the patient screen at full width, and probably on slightly smaller screens.

WARNING: The modified files in this mod are from the current 4.1.dev, and include tajemo's Dated Reminders system. If you do not have the dated reminders system in your version, make sure you have conducted the backups as follows:
Installation:
Back up your existing files by going to \openemr\interface\main\ and save the files named left_nav.php and main_screen.php elsewhere.

Download and extract the zip file above to a safe location. It will give you a directory called 'openemr'. You will dump this folder directly onto your existing openemr directory.

That's it!

If you have customized your left navigation bar (left_nav.php), you will want to compare the two files before installing. Similarly if you have a previous version of OpenEMR, you can compare your files against these and look for differences that involve: rows, cols, bot, top, bottom. The differences should be easy to spot.

Yes, Love it!!! No rest for the wicked. Homework - What the primary care clinician really needs to use an EMR effectively with the patient face to face:

Modify left_nav or put tabs across the top for "Today's visit":

Subj:
Submenu: cc(Encounter text), HPI, PMHx, ROS

Obj:
Submenu: vs, exam, labs (inhouse)

Assess:
Submenu: ICD and DSM lookup discrete data entry, Free text "comments"

Plan:
Submenu: Labs, Imaging, Procedures, Other modalities, Education info lookup and print, Prescription interface, Disposition (referrals and return appointment),
Billing with CPT lookup, Signoff (close, sign and lock, or supervisor sign and lock)

Each choice brings up the entry fields in the center panel (with the ability to scroll back and ahead through the note) and appropriate linked info in the right panel for past review, cloning, etc. Text fields incorporate NationNotes or the TajEmo memorized text, voice recognition, choices

I'm salivating!!! Well, I can dream - no? Let's find he money for this and we will have the best damn EMR anywhere - hands down!

Jack,

Get out your crayon and coloring paper, (or a pen and the back of a script pad) and draw me what the menus look like (in preferred and optional settings), and I'll check to see what I can come up with based on my homework list.
I assume that you want this tagged to a doctor type acl group, so that billers don't have to put up with it, ya?
What else should the doc have access to in interest of simplifying the available menus?

@javacoders
Any suggestions on using java resolution detection to swap out cols for rows, giving side-by-side for large screens, and leaving it top-bottom for narrow or small resolution?

A power user option idea:

Vert split, with tabs dropped into the relevant frame only controlling that frame. Tabs that are patient specific update with patient change, but all others, like billing, reports, and even displayed documents that belong to a different patient will stay static. If you could easily open several patient documents in individual tabs and keep them static, reviewing say, multiple diagnostic images for one patient, or dealing with documents that are relevant to several patients (sibling groups etc...) would get a real boost. Tabs might need to minimize when the mouse is off, and enlarge when hovering.
Of course, knowledgeable users on real browsers can already statically display frames as new tabs or windows. Is there any utility to be gained by using browser tabs as normal options for opening stuff?

While whole-image tab buttons that do the highlight or alternate image thing would be nicer than a checkbox for toggling, I think this approach rocks. Any thoughts on patient switch behavior?
